John 1:12 [1] As many as received Him (Who? Jesus!) if they had received Him, were they still lost in sin? I don't think so. But, just because they had received Him, did that mean that they had the sonship that was promised to those that believed on His Name? I don't think so. Verse 13 [2] says that sonship came to those that were born of God. Not born of blood, not the will of flesh, not the will of man, but, of God. I find three elements in scripture that God uses to produce birth. They are Word John 1:18 [3] and I Peter 1:23 [4] and water and Spirit John 3:5 [5] and Acts 2:38 [6]. I see this principle all through the book of Acts. Acts 2:41 [7] about three thousand were baptized (born of water). Acts 8:12, 14, 16, 17 [8] Both men and women were baptized (born of water) in the name of the Lord Jesus and received the Holy Ghost (born of the Spirit). Acts 10: 44 [9] while Peter was speaking words (what word? Verse 36 and 37 [10] the Word of God) the Holy Ghost fell on them which heard the Word. Verse 48 [11] they were baptized in the Name of the Lord. There is the three elements: Word, water, Spirit.

Acts 19: 1-7 [12] about twelve men received the Holy Ghost and spoke in tongues (Spirit) because Paul preached Jesus to them (He is the Word John1:1 [13]) and they were baptized in the Name of the Lord Jesus (water). According to John 7:39 [14] this could not happen until Jesus was glorified. They could receive Him and be baptized in His name John 4:1 and 2:23 [15] but they could not receive the Spirit until He was glorified. When He was born from the dead (not just raised but born) then He was glorified. When He ascended up to the throne of God, He poured out His Spirit causing them to be born into His kingdom. By His death, they had become reconciled to God Romans 5:9 [16]. They had been washed by the shedding of His blood Rev. 1:5 [17], purged by His blood Heb.9:22,15 [18] but, they were not born of blood John 1:14 [19]. After He paid the ransom for them Acts 20:28 [20] and brought them out of the authority of darkness Col.1:13 [21] by His death and shedding of His blood, then He could translate them into His New Covenant Acts 11:15 [22] and Heb.10:9 [23].
